UPM's President and CEO Jussi Pesonen at the company's Annual General MeetingA strong cash flow and balance sheet provide means to realise growth opportunitiesUPM’s President and CEO Jussi Pesonen confirmed his confidence in UPM’s continued positive development at the company’s Annual General Meeting today. “Following a strong performance in 2010, UPM is well positioned both in terms of business cycle and strategy”. “There has been a solid start to 2011. Deliveries and price increases have materialised as expected; however, unfortunately, cost pressures are accelerating”. “The outlook for 2011 continues to be favourable. Operating profit, excluding special items, is expected to improve on 2010 and the first half of the year will improve markedly on the first half of 2010”. “We have taken significant strategic steps by growing in cost-competitive pulp production and driving consolidation of the European paper industry. Now, our strategic aim is to shift the focus to markets and businesses with sustained growth and value creation. Each business area has a clearly defined strategic agenda supporting UPM’s renewal. Salaried employees will begin strike at UPM in FinlandRepeated strikes will shift orders permanently from the Finnish production units to other locationsTomorrow, on 6 April at 6:00 Finnish time, the salaried employees have announced to begin a two-week strike which would affect the majority of UPM’s operations in Finland. The strike does not include UPM’s mechanical forest industry, that is, Plywood, Timber and UPM ProFi businesses, UPM’s forestry specialists, senior salaried employees, nor salaried employees of other forestry companies in Finland. At UPM, there are around 1,300 salaried employees working, among others, within the supply chain, and finance and HR in Finland.
”At this stage it is impossible to estimate the exact impacts of the strike but even a conservative estimate of the damage would be given in millions of euros. When the strike begins, we most probably must start to running down paper mills already within a couple of days,” says Jyrki Ovaska, President of UPM’s Paper Business Group. "The continuous disturbances on the labour market damage Finland’s reputation and the repeated strikes will shift orders permanently to other locations from the Finnish production units. According to the application for summons, Metsähallitus claims jointly and severally from the three companies an aggregate capital amount of approximately EUR 282.6 million in maximum as damages allegedly incurred by Metsähallitus in connection with the competition infringements in question. In relation to the claims on capital amounts, Metsähallitus also claims for compensation relating to value added tax and interests. UPM will review Metsähallitus’ application for summons in detail. However, as a starting point, UPM considers the claims unfounded in their entirety. UPM is of the view that it has not caused any damage to Metsähallitus in connection with the competition infringements. UPM emphasizes that the Market Court has not investigated the alleged damage ... UPM ProFi to be the first European manufacturer to be awarded CE marking for the composite terrace systemUPM ProFi® Deck is the first wood-plastic composite based terrace deck system manufactured in Europe that has been awarded the right to use the CE marking. This marking is the manufacturer's confirmation of the product's compliance with EU quality requirements.
UPM ProFi Deck has been product tested by VTT Expert Services Oy. The experts examined a total of 15 material properties. The entire process has taken more than three years. First, requirements to be met by the product were set. Then, the product was tested according to these requirements; after this, ETA approval could be issued. EU approval involved several rounds of comments. ”With the marking we can show that our product has been tested accordingly and that its properties fulfil the promises we make to our customers. The CE marking is a quantum leap for the entire industry as it enables reliable comparison between products. Thus, we hope that other manufacturers will follow suit. By being a pioneer in this area as well as others, we have a head start over competitors since no other manufacturer has accomplished this," states Director of UPM ProFi, Markku Koivisto. ...UPM - Step into the Pro Label StudioUPM Raflatac has launched a new website for label and packaging designers.
