 Juggling with different media channels is child’s play with AdX. | © ppi Media.

 Nordkurier chooses ppi Media’s AdX

 Print, Online, Mobile and Broadcast: in future AdX will bundle all the media channels at the Nordkurier on a central GUI. Ads, banners and radio spots will be entered and placed using the cross-media ad solution developed by ppi Media, a subsidiary of manroland.
Apart from AdX, the Nordkurier will also install AdDispo. This solution, used for print ads, ensures that all ad placements are implemented correctly and without conflicts. In addition, the PlanPag module for magazine planning and production, and ProForm for PDF assembly, are to be installed during the coming weeks.
One face to the customerAdX, a cross-media ad solution, has been developed by ppi for the reservation of online, mobile and print advertising formats. Broadcast will be added to this range for the Nordkurier. Bookings for print ads are visualized in a page dummy, while online, mobile and broadcast bookings are displayed on a joint planning board. An aggregate view shows the bookings for all the media in a clear overview.
Magazine production: one workflow, two productsApart from the daily edition of the Nordkurier, attractive advertising media are, above all, magazines. In future they will be produced with ppi Media&amp;rsquo;s magazine workflow. PlanPag, the central planning and production solution, will be upgraded to enable this. On the familiar GUI, it will then be possible to place ads in the bleed, for instance, without having to use additional applications or interfaces.
More than just PDF assemblyAn important step in newspaper and magazine production is the assembly of the individual files. When installed and configured accordingly, the ppi system allows all combinations of input and output formats. These files are successively converted and merged to PDF. The simultaneous provision of compressed files for the internet and other media or for archiving is just as easy as handling mixed data and color substitution and color re-routing.

 <title>manroland AG - News International networked by printnet</title>

 The Technical Managers in the Control Center of the Newsprinters locations are informed within seconds about production progress and new jobs. They allocate the jobs to the presses and notify the printers responsible. | © manroland.

 Data evaluation as a basis for complex decisions

 19 COLORMAN, XXL press lines at three News International production locations in Great Britain are networked via printnet. PECOM is a component of printnet and controls the production, and the presses are monitored 24/7 with the new smartmonitoring tool.
Newsprinters is the UK production company of Rupert Murdoch&amp;rsquo;s News International, and the dimensions of the printing facilities are impressive: in full operation 300,000 tons of paper are printed per year for the company&amp;rsquo;s own titles such as The Sun, The Times, Sunday Times and News of the World alone. At the Eurocentral, Knowsley, and Broxbourne locations there are two, five, and twelve COLORMAN, XXL press lines respectively, each with five or six towers. They all print non-collect &amp;ndash; per press line 86,000 copies of a 120- or 144-page tabloid newspaper. The degree of automation in the materials flow varies. Reel preparation is generally done fully automatically by AUROSYS, including delivery of the paper to the reel splicers. The press lines are controlled and coordinated by manroland&amp;rsquo;s PECOM system, and the entire printing plant from the editorial offices to the presses to AUROSYS and to the mailroom is networked by printnet.
The vast amount of data from production is stored within seconds on a server around the clock, seven days a week. printnet Monitor with the modules pressMonitor, pressReport, pressState, pressStatistics, and postpressMonitor delivers reports according to specific, combinable filter criteria for the entire production chain to provide exact analyses and statistics for each day and production so that the newspaper publisher can immediately identify trends and react accordingly.
Optimal print preparation and controlPECOM takes care of presetting and control of the press lines. Positioning of the turner bars or alignment of the cut-off register is done automatically which rules out the risk of error-prone double inputs. Production runs are pre-planned and the data is transferred to printnet pressManager. Press data is added and it is defined which press is to print the job, along with presettings for web lead, folder or drive components. &amp;ldquo;printnet and especially PECOM makes setting up our presses very simple even when the product requirements are complex&amp;rdquo;, is how Allan Wain, Operations Director North at Newsprinters (Knowsley) Ltd., summarizes his experience. &amp;ldquo;Product data can be stored as required and even downloaded to other presses. This information is shared with our prepress supplier to enable automatic production of plates to the relevant job. Data can be modified very easily as required to take account of different running conditions to produce good quality copy quickly.&amp;rdquo;
pressProof helps to avoid errors. Instead of expensive hardcopy proofs, the actual content of the newspaper pages can be visualized on a full-page monitor at the press control console. All information from production status through to delivery is collected in the Control Center. If a job situation changes or there are technical problems, from here the Production Manager can intervene.
printnet filters and evaluates dataThe comprehensive networking at Newsprinters not only serves for work preparation. Also during production printnet Monitor stores all technically relevant data from materials consumption through makeready time, printing time, and interruptions right up to press speed and the status of copies produced. The automatically generated data is supplemented by manual inputs in the production data acquisition system DataCollect. Here the human resources can explain operations more precisely. &amp;ldquo;We wanted to be able to monitor the performance of multiple presses at multiple locations in real time,&amp;rdquo; says Allan Wain. &amp;ldquo;The printnet Monitor facility provides all the information I need to know about how a production run is going as it happens. This facility enables quick and informed decisions to be made which ensures our production is completed in an efficient and cost-effective way. The copy counting facility is a major factor in reducing our run waste.&amp;rdquo; After the job is completed the data can be evaluated and compared, both technically and commercially. The versatile filter function via pressMonitor is decisive. A search command could be for instance: &amp;ldquo;Show me all jobs run on press A last week with more than 100,000 copies and also show me the production plan&amp;rdquo;.
The tool selects production data according to the widest variety of parameters via logical links, which enables weak points and trends to be detected. pressReport visualizes the progress of a print job in detail via a press logbook. The printer can see at a glance key figures regarding paper waste, production duration or web leads. Here actual and target data of the printing process is compared. pressState shows press status in real time: paper waste data and net copy counter, press speed and anticipated end of the run. Based on data updated daily, pressStatistic provides a statistical evaluation of all production runs of the 19 presses over any nominated period. postpressMonitor collects the postpress production data and permits an overview of the entire production process. This enables Newsprinters to quickly detect every change in productivity. If one of the printing plants develops a Best-in-Class procedure, the others benefit from this as well. This is how Newsprinters maintains a consistently high level of productivity.

 <title>Precision Printing Chooses DirectSmile Cross Media </title>

 Precision Printing announced its new Cross Media capabilities at mediaPro 2009

 UK commercial print specialist, Precision Printing, installs DirectSmile Cross Media software to provide customers with highly targeted, integrated marketing campaigns and visibility of results. Using Cross Media, the company anticipates improved campaign success and increased return on investment (ROI) for customers.&amp;nbsp;
At mediaPro 2009, Precision Printing announced it would be adding DirectSmile Cross Media software to its extensive range of commercial print capabilities. This leading print service provider has been supplying printed marketing materials to many high-profile customers for over 40 years, and is now extending its offering to include marketing services across the digital media communication channels (URL, SMS and email).
Gary Peeling, Managing Director of Precision Printing, explains, &amp;quot;Much of the research into current marketing trends suggests that an integrated approach is much more effective than using just one communication method. This approach can raise campaign success rates by about 30-50%. Therefore, expanding our service offering to include Internet marketing methods, as well as print, seemed like an obvious progression for the business. When we reviewed the various solutions that would enable us to take this next step, the team at DirectSmile had a good understanding of the market and Cross Media software met all of our requirements, including being compatible with our HP Indigo print technology. Cross Media offers a complete package, rather than separate modules, and it provides a transparent customer &amp;lsquo;dashboard&#039; for monitoring feedback and cleansing data - an invaluable tool for keeping clients well informed and clearly demonstrating ROI for their campaign.&amp;quot;
Cross Media not only enables the creation of personalised marketing campaigns across the communication platforms of print, SMS, email and URL websites, it is also used to track campaign responses and measure activity, presented via online reports. This allows the user to improve their customer database and strengthen customer relations through better targeted, follow up campaigns.
&amp;quot;Providing campaign recipients with a means to communicate with the sender opens up a dialogue that companies wouldn&#039;t otherwise have,&amp;quot; continues Gary. &amp;quot;It&#039;s a fantastic way to ascertain exactly what your customers are looking for, and this new understanding is indispensable to ensure future marketing campaigns are successful, and ultimately, your sales and profits increase.&amp;quot;
Cross Media was installed at Precision Printing during the week commencing 16th November. However, at mediaPro 2009 - two weeks prior to the installation - Precision Printing received many new business enquiries from companies interested in its new personalisation and Internet marketing capabilities.
Gary says, &amp;quot;DirectSmile&#039;s online Cross Media tour (www.crossmediatour.com) has provided us with a great tool for communicating the benefits of an integrated campaign to potential and existing customers. Even if they have never produced personalised emails and URLs, it helps them to immediately visualise their own online campaigns.
&amp;quot;Some of our customers are already using personalised emails and URLs, as part of an integrated marketing campaign. While we were their preferred printer for these campaigns, they had to enlist multiple agencies to complete the online part of the job. Now that we can provide personalised marketing materials in every format, these customers only need to deal with one point of contact and, having worked with us the past, they know that they can expect a high-quality, reliable service from start to finish.&amp;quot;

 DirectSmile is the inventor of image personalization and one of the leading suppliers of software for variable data printing and cross-media marketing. Award-winning DirectSmile solutions allow users to implement sophisticated personalization tasks with ease, efficiency and smooth workflows, and leverage the power of one-to-one-communications across all media.

For printers, designers and agencies, using DirectSmile opens up new profitable fields of business ranging from selling high-value image personalized print products to the end-customer and producing high-impact customized direct mailings to creating personalized response-tracking websites and establishing web-to-print portals.
On May 1, 2009 DirectSmile launched DirectSmile Cross Media, a new, integrated solution for cross-media marketing. DirectSmile Cross Media enables users to create personal URL websites for real-time campaign tracking and send high-volumes of personalized e-mailings. Integrated workflow at Al Ittihad goes live

 Software vendors ppi Media GmbH (a subsidiary of manroland AG) and KnowledgeView Ltd., a leading publishing solutions provider in Europe and the MENA region, have strengthened their cooperation to introduce a publishing workflow with maximum automation to the Arabian market.
The Abu Dhabi Media Company (ADMC), publisher of the daily newspapers The National and Al Ittihad, signed contracts with the two companies. Both dailies lately optimized their publishing and editorial workflows with solutions from ppi and KnowledgeView. The result is a combined workflow that allows highly integrated processes, customized products for the Arabian market and optimized interfaces. &amp;ldquo;Since the partners know each other&amp;rsquo;s products very well, integration was smooth and only took a few days until we produced the first pages. It couldn&amp;rsquo;t have gone better,&amp;rdquo; said Raed Alkhatib, production manager at Al Ittihad. For page layout in Adobe InDesign, ppi&amp;rsquo;s and KnowledgeView&amp;rsquo;s products merge to form a unit. The RAPID Browser plug-in is directly integrated in InDesign, whereas PlanPag is linked by ppi&amp;rsquo;s InDesign plug-in InLink. InLink creates and manages production documents for editors and layout designers, so that editing is always based on the latest planning data. This allows tight integration between Ad planning, editorial planning and workflow at the press floor with significant improvements in efficiency through tracking of production progress across the whole cycle. To achieve maximum automation in the publishing and editorial department, ADMC has ordered ppi&amp;rsquo;s PlanPag and PressEditor for newspaper production, AdMan and AdPag for the advertising department, as well as ProPag and printnet OM for the prepress workflow. At Al Ittihad, RAPID Browser is complemented by PageView and RAPID Archive from KnowledgeView, as part of the Publish live product suite for news management, editorial workflow and multi-publishing.
About KnowledgeView KnowledgeView Ltd is a UK-based company with headquarters in London and offices in the Middle East. The company was founded in 1995 to develop cross-media publishing, news management and editorial sharing systems. Users of KnowledgeView&amp;rsquo;s Publish live solutions included the Independent News and Media, Guardian Media Group, News Corporation and the Washington Post. In the Middle East, KnowledgeView is a leading newspaper integrator, with over 40 media companies, providing consultancy as well as technology.

 Jon Tolley, managing director, Prime

 Prime Group, based in Nottingham, was founded in 1988 as a traditional lithographic print house. In 2003, the company invested in its first digital press and using DirectSmile software has established itself as one of the UK&#039;s leading producers of personalized items including calendars, stationery, direct mail, books, brochures and gifts.
As a long-term DirectSmile customer, Prime first invested in the software almost six years ago. Jon Tolley, managing director, Prime Group, explained, &amp;quot;One of the major motivations for moving into digital printing was the opportunity that it gave us to stay ahead of the competition, by offering our clients innovative, new services such as variable data printing (VDP) and image personalization. We realized that in order to move successfully into these new markets we had to invest in market leading technologies, so we purchased DirectSmile software.&amp;quot;
Prime currently uses the scalable DirectSmile Production Edition for high-volume image and document generation, and DirectSmile Online, configured to Prime&#039;s specifications to deliver variable documents, customized images and personalized animations to its web-to-print portal and printing systems.
&amp;quot;DirectSmile is very user-friendly and its Online Server comes with an intuitive, optimized interface, which allows us to make customized images and documents available for sale on the Internet. This makes it much easier for people to purchase personalized, individual printed items, than in the past. People can order products delivered straight to their door, without leaving their desks,&amp;quot; explained Tolley.
Setting new standardsPrime and DirectSmile have worked closely together to push the boundaries of what can be achieved through effective personalization.
&amp;quot;The team at DirectSmile are excellent to work with and are always very keen to help us devise new ways of fulfilling our customers&#039; requirements,&amp;quot; said Tolley.
&amp;quot;DirectSmile is an incredibly versatile piece of software that has been easily integrated with our existing systems, allowing us to personalize an increasingly innovative range of one off applications, such as personalized books, to win new business,&amp;quot; explained Tolley.
Innovative applicationsSince 2007, Prime has specialized in producing customized books using DirectSmile technology. People looking for a special, unique gift are able to create a personalized &amp;lsquo;Me to You&#039; book via Penwizard&#039;s website, www.mymagicalbook.com. This web application presents users with a range of user-friendly design templates, which allow users to choose from two different stories and to customize the illustrations.
Each user is able to enter the recipient&#039;s name; the name of the sender; a personal message and the occasion, such as Valentine&#039;s Day, a birthday, or an anniversary, online. This information is used to collect the variable data to customize the book.
Each of the 24 page books is heavily personalized, containing images that have been customized using DirectSmile Software. This enables illustrations of Tatty Teddy to include the chosen names, message and occasion selected by the user, to create an individual gift that will be treasured by its recipient.
&amp;quot;The &amp;lsquo;Me to You&#039; books are very unusual because instead of using customized photography, they feature personalized illustrations. DirectSmile&#039;s speed and ease of use is perfect for customizing one off items. It has enabled us to break into new markets by offering niche applications,&amp;quot; commented Tolley.
ProductionWeb-to-print technology allows the &amp;lsquo;Me to You&#039; books to be produced in a flexible way. Prime is able to download the variable data needed to customize the books at a time when it is convenient, rather than being restricted by a fixed production schedule. The high-quality, gloss laminated books are produced using one of Prime&#039;s HP Indigo presses and are perfect bound and finished in-house. All orders for the books are completed within seven days.
The future&amp;quot;For us, DirectSmile is much more than just personalization software and it has become integral to the way we work, its document solution tools are second to none and we use it every single day.
&amp;quot;We believe that it has been instrumental in the growth of our business and the success of our digital department. DirectSmile is constantly evolving, enabling us to offer a larger range of inspiring and exciting personalized items and we believe that it will play a large role in our business in the years to come,&amp;quot; concluded Tolley.
