UPM has launched a new paper for high-speed inkjet colour printing within its UPM DIGI paper range at the IPEX 2010 fair in Birmingham, UK.

The UPM DIGI Color Jet is a pigmented inkjet paper. It prints vivid colours and uniform solids and has high colour intensity with low ink amounts. The paper has been granted the EU Eco-label as a proof of its strong environmental performance in manufacturing and sustainable raw material use. The producing mill, UPM Docelles, also has PEFC and FSC Chain of Custodies, confirming the origin of wood.
The 90 g/m2 paper is available in reels. "This paper completes our inkjet paper range by offering top in the class colour printing quality and excellent water fastness on all major high speed inkjet devices," says Mikko Mensonen, UPM, Product Manager, Office, Postal & DIGI papers.

End-users can select from a variety of surface finishes (gloss, silk and matt) and from a wide spectrum of basis weights, ranging from 45 to 350 g/m2. The UPM DIGI range is designed for the most versatile digital end-user sectors, such as personalised direct mail, high quality advertising materials, transactional documents, books and newspapers, catalogues or magazines.
The range offers paper qualities for all the common digital printing systems based on electrophotography or ink-jet technology, for mono and colour printing, and various sizes such as cut sizes, folio sheets, Xeikon reels, and large diameter reels for digital web printing.

Eric Armour, president, Global Business Group, Xerox Corporation

LONDON, Feb. 08, 2010 -- Today at the IPEX Media Summit, Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) demonstrated its leadership in the global digital production print) market by announcing several new deals with customers using Xerox technology and services to boost their bottom lines. The company furthered this leadership position with a preview of IPEX announcements, including news about Xerox's first production inkjet system.
"The strategy behind adding inkjet to the Xerox portfolio is comparable to how automobile manufacturers offer cars powered by gas, diesel or electricity - each meets a different performance standard," said Eric Armour, president, Global Business Group, Xerox Corporation. "We delivered breakthrough toner-based color continuous feed solutions allowing new levels of cost, image quality and speed for transpromotional applications. Our new offering will meet similar requirements for those looking for an inkjet option."
At IPEX, the company will also show enhancements to the Xerox 650/1300™ Continuous Feed Printing Systems, toner-based monochrome devices. These include heavy-weight media compatibility, running duplex applications up to 200 gsm and the FreeFlow™ Print Server 7 and ImageSmooth® Technology, delivering unmatched image quality without slowing down the printer.
During the IPEX Media Summit, customers described how Xerox's digital technology and business development services have successfully opened up new revenue streams:

Cathedral Corporation (U.S.) - This service bureau is the first in the U.S. to install a Xerox 980 Color Continuous Feed System, addressing a growing demand for color and personalized transpromotional pieces. Xerox's continuous feed technology is meeting Cathedral's business needs in ways that high-speed inkjet solutions cannot, allowing Cathedral to produce highly targeted communications quickly and cost effectively.
"We evaluated a number of technology options, including the high-speed inkjet devices that are available today," said Marianne Gaige, president and CEO, Cathedral. "The image quality of the Xerox 980 system was far superior; our decision was easy."

EXPRES Printing (Romania) - Selling the value and quality of digital print is particularly challenging where the digital print market is considered uncharted territory. Graphic communications provider EXPRES Printing is leading the way in this developing market by installing the Xerox iGen4™ Press, and the Xerox 700 Digital Color Press - and by joining Xerox's Graphic Arts Premier Partners Program.
"The technology investment is only part of the solution," said Dacian Badea, executive manager, EXPRES Printing. "Our partnership with Xerox - in terms of technology, business development and its FreeFlow Digital Workflow Collection - gives us a significant competitive advantage. This benefits our customers and, ultimately, our business."
Mediaware Digital (Ireland) - One of the first customers to install Xerox's Automated Packaging Solution powered by Stora Enso Gallop™, Mediaware is helping Microsoft Corporation bring Windows 7 to market faster.
"Given the worldwide distribution in multiple languages required for this project, we needed a solution that could produce different sized batches of the packaging with specialized information for different regions," said Ronan Phipps, director, business and strategy, Mediaware Digital. "We found this, and more, in the Xerox solution."

Xerox at IPEX 2010 In its Real Business Live! Theater, presentations will cover topics such as profit generating print jobs, increasing automation and 1:1 marketing. These business relevant discussions will combine industry expertise and application demonstrations.
The XMPie® Innovation Showcase, which debuted to audience acclaim at Print 09, has been enhanced for IPEX. Attendees will have the opportunity to personally interact with an XMPie-driven cross-media campaign - complete with a customized postcard, e-mail message, Response URL™ (RURL) Web site, Google Map, PayPal transaction, mobile message and fulfillment offering.
Xerox will also sponsor its Best-of-the-Best contest at IPEX, open to members of its Graphic Arts Premier Partners Program. Contestants that demonstrate the best digital print applications - with exceptional image quality and tangible business results - will receive awards during the show.
Xerox's booth at IPEX 2010 will be located in hall 7, stand 7-CD450, May 18-25 in Birmingham, U.K.

Lode Deprez, Vice President & Toner Developer Group at Punch Graphix

World’s greenest manufacturer of printing equipment and consumables teams with one of the primary energy producers in Belgium, for 100% green energy in toner manufacturing process

Lier, Belgium, February 2, 2010 – Xeikon, a division of Punch Graphix, announced it is under contract with one of the primary energy suppliers in Belgium to utilize 100% green power from renewable energy in its toner manufacturing operations based in Heultje, Belgium, as of January 1, 2010. Xeikon has been a leader in the digital printing market in ensuring that its technology results in as little environmental impact as possible throughout the entire printing supply chain.
“Often when people speak about ‘green’ printing, they are primarily concerned with whether materials are printed on recycled paper or paper from managed and renewable forests,” explains Lode Deprez, Vice President of Toner R&D and Production at Punch Graphix. “But that barely scratches the surface. The printed paper must also be recyclable, the printing process must conserve water and use no VOCs, and the energy use and production of waste must be drastically reduced. Xeikon has met all of these requirements and more, both in its manufacturing processes and in the way its customers use the equipment throughout its lifecycle in the field. The new energy contract ensures we are using 100% green electricity in our toner manufacturing operation and we are proud to again assert our leadership position in an area of growing importance: environmental sustainability.”
Xeikon Sustainability Highlights Over the years, Xeikon has taken many steps to ensure that its products and their output have the smallest possible environmental footprint. These include:

All Xeikon plants strictly comply with the EU WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive to reduce the annual volumes of waste from discarded equipment. Xeikon also pursues the objectives of the Environmental Action Plan (MAP) for energy conservation, promoting the use of renewable energy. In addition, all facilities have separate systems that remove wastewater and rainwater separately, reducing the pressure on wastewater processing.
At Xeikon’s toner plant in Heultje (Belgium), energy consumption per kg of produced toner has decreased by more than 35% over the last years. This is accomplished through recovering heat from the toner manufacturing process to heat the building and investments in new production technology
Xeikon recovers and reuses toner waste generated during the manufacturing process to the greatest extent possible and recycles toner packaging. Toner that cannot be recovered and reused is compressed with wood pulp for use as fuel in the cement industry. This means that zero toner waste from the manufacturing process ends up in a landfill. As a result of this and other efforts, the volume of waste produced over the past years has decreased by more than 50%.
Compared with the traditional offset process, Xeikon presses consume more than 6 kilowatt hours less energy in a typical print run of 5,000 full color duplex-printed A3 sheets. For the same print run the offset process consumes 6 liters of process water, whereas Xeikon presses use none at all. Presses are equipped with a closed loop circulation cooling system, use no process water and do not cause any water pollution or air pollution since no VOC’s are involved in the production and printing process.
In collaboration with all parties involved in the logistics process, Xeikon created an intelligent total packaging concept for its presses based on reusable packaging. In addition, toner comes in recyclable HPDE bottles, again minimizing the impact on the environment.
Material printed on a Xeikon press has a deinkability score greater than 90% according to INGEDE Method 11, an international standard, guaranteeing recyclability of Xeikon printed product.

“These are just the highlights of the actions we have taken to ensure that Xeikon and its customers are ahead of the curve in complying with environmental regulations,” concludes Deprez. “By now adding 100% green energy into the mix, we have taken another giant step to maintain our environmental leadership in this industry. Our results prove that ECO-logy and ECO-nomy can go together. Our efforts to make our products sustainable and safe does not make them more expensive or less competitive. As a result, our customers are able to cost-effectively market safe and sustainable technology in a world that is growing increasingly sensitive to environmental issues.”

ARTtrust is specifically designed to meet the need for artwork traceability and authenticity

HP today announced at Paris Photo 2009, the European launch of ARTtrust, a simple, self-certification system that allows photographers and artists to provide individual identity to any Digital Fine Art Collection Pigment Print (Pigment Print), produced on HP Designjet Z series printers using HP Vivera pigment inks with any compatible media.
A joint development between HP and Prooftag™, and endorsed by Wilhelm Imaging Research, ARTtrust is specifically designed to meet the need for artwork traceability and authenticity. With increased control and availability of information online, artists, photographers and end-customers can be assured of artwork provenance, protect investments and ensure future value.
ARTtrust users include creators (photographers, designers, digital or traditional artists), printmakers (artists who print themselves, pro photo labs, specialised fine art print makers print service providers), art retailers (galleries, auction houses) and owners (private collections and public institutions or museums).
The ARTtrust solution comprises a set of three labels and a website. Labels carry a unique Bubble Tag™ (1), a reference number and datamatrix. Each label has a different function: the silver one goes on the back of artwork, the golden one on the certificate or accompanying document, the blue one for the artist to keep in his file or dossier. Any buyer can control authenticity of the artwork, on the website, by typing from his mobile the number of the silver or gold tag. He will then see a picture of the Bubble Tag™ and can compare visually. As the tags are tamper-proof, authenticity is assured.
Specifically designed for the art community, ARTtrust pigment prints are produced using HP Designjet Z series printers and HP Vivera pigment inks. With image permanence of more than 200 years(2), pigment prints are not only assured of HP longevity, but used in combination with a range of HP photo, fine art and specialty papers, of also market leading image quality.
Thierry Dupasquier, business development manager, Imaging and Printing Group, HP, said, “HP Designjet Z series printers deliver gallery-quality, black-and-white and colour photographs, art enlargements, large-format designs and high-accuracy proofs that stand out and long lasting.”
The development of ARTtrust began more than two years ago, involving photographers and artists of the HP Experts and Mentors network. Once the availability and capability of the Prooftag technology was known, the solution was quickly established as the most suitable system to deliver the projects objectives.
“HP is committed to bringing solutions to the creative and design communities, that improve how artists produce and protect their work,” said Santi Morera, vice president and general manager, Large-Format Printing Solutions, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. “We are working with artists to help them bring their work to life in vivid colour and rich detail, and deliver innovative solutions, like ARTtrust, which preserve artistic integrity and add value.”
With commercial availability expected in January 2010, Prooftag will be responsible for introducing ARTtrust to the worldwide art markets. HP will continue to support the solution and promote it to customers, whether they are print service providers or from the printers retail network.
“ARTtrust is the first fine art certification program that requires the use of permanence tested, high-stability pigment inks and media, and identifies and registers each individual print in a secure and easily traceable way,” said Henry Wilhelm, co-founder of research at Wilhelm Imaging Research, Inc. “The ARTtrust program sets a new standard for print quality, permanence, and integrity.”
Following its worldwide launch at PhotoPlus Expo 2009, ARTtrust has already received positive feedback from individual photographers, such as Joel Meyerowitz and international photo agencies including Magnum.
“With the transition from silver halide to digital, the creative community has seen important changes to printing technology in the past few years,” explains François Martin, marketing director, Graphic Solution Business, HP. “At HP, we strive to provide high quality products and services, to create a complete and secure digital production process. We believe that ARTtrust represents a significant step in achieving this aim.”
For additional information about ARTtrust, visit: www.ARTtrustonline.com.
(1) Bubble Tags™ are made with a transparent polymer containing random bubbles and issued to the artist as proof of membership of the scheme. Images of this Bubble Tag on labels identify the artist’s work.(2) Image permanence estimates by HP Image Permanence Lab based on testing on a range of HP photo, fine art and specialty papers. Confirmation tests in progress at Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc. Details are available at www.hp.com/go/supplies/printpermanence.

HP provides the industry's most comprehensive, high-end digital printing portfolio - producing everything from postage stamps to building wraps - to deliver profitable growth for customers, while backed by HP's leadership, commitment to customer success and dedication to global responsibility.

Marsh Labels’ HP Indigo press ws4050 enables the company to bring digital printing and finishing in house

First Digicon Lite converting unit part of digital installation

LONDON, England, 02 November 2009 – HP today announced that Marsh Labels Ltd, of Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, has bought an HP Indigo press ws4050 and the first Digicon Lite converting unit from A B Graphic International.
Marsh Labels is a family-owned business specialising in hot foil labels, but also offering litho, flexo printed labels, primarily in short runs. These services are provided to a broad customer base ranging from private individuals to agencies and print-buyers for blue-chip companies and brands.
“We have handled digital label jobs for customers for a number of years, but subcontracted the printing,” said Gary Burnley, director, Marsh Labels. “Having our own press and finishing capabilities means that we control the process, the production and ensure the quality.”
In addition to hot foil stamping, the company has also established a niche in the short-run printing of barcodes. Its new HP Indigo press, due to be installed and fully operation by November, in time for the peak season, will be able to handle barcodes, batch numbers and sell-by dates using its variable data capability.
Marsh Labels’ HP Indigo press has a seven-colour capability, including white, which is of particular use when printing transparent substrates.
The Digicon Lite converting unit from HP partner A B Graphic International offers small label printers a compact and powerful entry-level solution providing flood varnishing, UV curing, semi-rotary die-cutting, slitting and rewinding. In addition to these, the unit supplied to Marsh Labels includes a lamination feature. Bringing all these functions in-house in a single space-saving unit has further facilitated the company’s move to digital production.
“There is no doubt that this is a big step for a small company,” Burnley said. “The combination of the HP Indigo press and the Digicon Lite gives us not only the ability to meet our customers’ growing requirements for digital print, but also the opportunity to grow our own business by providing a more complete and competitive service.”

HP provides the industry's most comprehensive, high-end digital printing portfolio - producing everything from postage stamps to building wraps - to deliver profitable growth for customers, while backed by HP's leadership, commitment to customer success and dedication to global responsibility.
