New finishing best practice guide
&amp;ldquo;Perfectly Finished Web Printed Products&amp;rdquo; is the recently released 8th Best Practice Guide.&amp;nbsp; Correct finishing is not only essential to communicate the quality of a printed product, but it can also have a significant impact on profitability because defect costs are at their highest in an almost finished job. The purpose of WOCG&amp;rsquo;s new guide is to improve results through better communication and understanding amongst all participants in the workflow &amp;mdash; designers, print users, publishers, printers and binders, and their suppliers. The guide addresses: 1: Selection of a finishing method; 2: Printing process issues to optimise finished products; 3: Review of key postpress processing issues including delivery systems, inline finishing, saddle stitching, and perfect adhesive binding.
The Web Offset Champion Group was formed in 1998 to &amp;ldquo;champion&amp;rdquo; best practice in the web offset printing industry as a tool to improve productivity, quality and safety. Its members: Aylesford Newsprint, Kodak, Manroland, MEGTEC, M&amp;uuml;ller Martini, Quad Tech, SCA and Sun Chemical, and associates include Eurografica, Eltex, Printing Industries of America, System Brunner, Timsons, Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating, Swansea University.

 The Web Offset Champion Group comprises a number of leading global suppliers to the Web Offset printing industry.&amp;nbsp; It is focused on Web Offset printing and finishing and benefits from the combined knowledge of its members: Aylesford Newsprint, Kodak, manroland, MEGTEC, M&amp;uuml;ller Martini, Quad Tech, SCA and Sun Chemical.
WOCG &amp;lsquo;associates&amp;rsquo; include Eurografica, Eltex, Printing Industries of America, System Brunner, Timsons, Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating, Swansea University.
Promoting generic best practice for web offset printing
The Web Offset Champion Group was formed in 1998 to &amp;ldquo;champion&amp;rdquo; best practice in the web offset printing industry as a tool to improve productivity, quality and safety. The Group is a joint project of international suppliers working with other industry specialists, printers and associations throughout the world to publish best practice guides. Printing Industries of America is a content contributor and is also exclusive distributor in North America.
Focus on total production process
The group&amp;rsquo;s objective is to improve web offset productivity. This requires a cross-industry and cross-process approach because no single company can provide answers to all the variables of the press line and its consumables. Best practices are a tool to improve overall performance without making any capital investment. The potential returns are extremely high as each guide identifies ways to reduce processing costs, improve quality and reduce accidents.
Generic easy-to-read content
All web offset printers &amp;mdash; irrespective of the brands of equipment or consumables that they use &amp;mdash; can apply the generic content of guides. They provide printers with a base reference to best practice and effectively help transfer knowledge in a global industry.
Guides are written in a concise, easy-to-read style accompanied by numerous graphics and are intended to be read at all levels from managers to production employees. They explain how to work more efficiently, prevent errors, improve diagnostic procedures and help introduce new methods, standards and benchmarks.
World-wide review panel
Each guide is reviewed by a world-wide panel of industry specialists, printers, other suppliers and associations to improve their content and to ensure that they represent industry best practice.
Organisation
The Group is a non-profit organisation that is funded by sponsorship from its company members. Best practice information is contributed free-of-charge by members, other companies, individuals and associations.
WOCG is based in the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating, Swansea University. The joint managing directors of WOC Ltd are Dr. Tim Claypole and Nigel Wells.

 <title>manroland AG - Groundbreaking newspaper printing technology worldwide </title>
 <link>http://www.printerslounge.com/en/node/85464</link>
 <description>
 &lt;img alt=&quot;manroland AG - Groundbreaking newspaper printing technology worldwide &quot; src=&quot;http://www.printerslounge.com/files/UNISET_Hefei_China_300dpi_sm.jpg&quot; /&gt;Get original file (2248KB)

 Yes, we can – print them all: manroland presses ensure high-quality newspapers and selected commercials (from top to bottom): the REGIOMAN at Pressgrannar AB in Linköping/Sweden, the GEOMAN at Groupe Nice Matin in Nice/France, and the UNISET at Xin’an Media Corporation in Hefei/China. The UNISET for Sichuan Ribao has arrived in Chengdu/China by mid May. | © Pressgrannar AB, Groupe Nice Matin, Xin’an Media Corporation, Sichuan Ribao.

 Some topical examples: Linköping, Nice, Hefei, Chengdu

 manroland&amp;rsquo;s newspaper printing systems provide the suitable solution for every demand, everywhere. Latest installations cover Sweden, France, and China with groundbreaking manroland newspaper printing technology replacing older manroland or competitor presses.
Braving the elements to print one of the world&amp;rsquo;s oldest newspapersWith a REGIOMAN press manroland is presently installing latest technology for one of the world&amp;rsquo;s oldest newspapers at Pressgrannar AB in Link&amp;ouml;ping/Sweden: next to other dailies, different freesheets, and tabloid commercial products the REGIOMAN will soon produce the daily Norrk&amp;ouml;pings Tidningar. It was founded in 1758 which makes it one of the world&amp;rsquo;s ten oldest newspapers. &amp;ldquo;To make room for the REGIOMAN we enlarged the pressroom by twelve meters,&amp;rdquo; says Peter Dahl&amp;eacute;n, Project Manager at Pressgrannar. &amp;ldquo;In spite of the very hard and cold winter with sometimes minus 25 degrees Celsius we are perfectly in time with our production schedule,&amp;rdquo; adds manroland engineer Holger Limmer. The first part of the REGIOMAN with three printing towers and one folder has already been installed. Then the old press will be taken out and the second part of the REGIOMAN will move in. The final configuration features six reel splicers, six printing towers, and two folders. &amp;ldquo;We are very pleased with manroland and the first part of the project. Now we are looking forward to move full speed ahead with the rest,&amp;rdquo; says Peter Dahl&amp;eacute;n.
Enjoying the applause while replacing first COLORMAN after 34 yearsPart of a technical modernization program is the GEOMAN sale to Groupe Nice Matin in Nice in the South of France. Three  GEOMAN presses are going to replace Nice Matin&amp;rsquo;s COLORMAN printing  system which was installed in 1977 &amp;ndash;manroland&amp;rsquo;s first COLORMAN in the  market &amp;ndash; and extended during the following ten years. Now latest GEOMAN  technology is taking over, with each of the three presses consisting of  three reel splicers, three eight-couple towers, one folder, and PPL  (PowerPlateLoading), the highly automated plate changing device. Its  higher efficiency and full-color capacity will print Nice Matin&amp;rsquo;s  versatile product range economically and in high quality. It will  generate more contract printing business than before. Main products are  the dailies Nice Matin, Var Matin and Corse Matin with a circulation of  approximately 225,000 copies. Every day they come out with another  supplement on subjects such as real estate, health, automobile, etc.  Apart from that there are two weekly magazines and several freesheets to  be printed. The reception of the new presses couldn&amp;rsquo;t have been  friendlier: whenever new components were brought in, some of the 700  staff members of Nice Matin were watching and applauding. Delivery has  been finished by the end of April, production start is planned for July  2011. &amp;ldquo;I was always convinced it was the right decision to replace our  COLORMAN by new manroland technology,&amp;rdquo; says Christian Donati, former  Technical Director at Nice Matin. &amp;ldquo;Now I have retired but I will  accompany the GEOMAN project until production starts.&amp;rdquo; Patrick Molher,  present Technical Director, says: &amp;ldquo;My team and I are very much looking  forward to working with the new GEOMAN presses. We are sure they will  confirm our positive experiences with manroland and open a new chapter  of our successful partnership.&amp;rdquo;
Enlarging manroland territory in China with latest UNISET technologyTo a large extent China is manroland territory as far as newspaper presses are concerned. A new example to prove this is the UNISET for the Xin&amp;rsquo;an Media Corporation in Hefei, the capital of the Anhui province. It started producing at the beginning of the year 2011 and now prints 20 different newspapers, magazines, advertising material and books. It is China&amp;rsquo;s first 80,000 copies per hour UNISET featuring three reel splicers, three printing towers, one dryer, and two folders, one of them with a 16-page device. Xin&amp;rsquo;an Media Corporation is a joint venture of the Anhui Daily Newspaper Group and the South African MIH Print Media Group. The company was decorated for innovation and quality several times and its printing center with plants in Hefei, Huangshan and Fuyang is one of the most advanced in Mainland China.
Since 2004 the Sichuan Ribao Newspaper Group in Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan province, has been working with four UNISET presses. They print the daily paper Sichuan Ribao and other newspapers and magazines. From 2009 to 2010 Sichuan Ribao&amp;rsquo;s printing volume increased from 2.2 billion broadsheet pages to 2.6 billion, thus ranking among the Top Ten in China. New capacity for newspaper and commercial printing is urgently needed. Therefore and because Sichuan Ribao is very satisfied with the UNISET&amp;rsquo;s quality and reliability the 2,000 staff company ordered two new UNISET printing systems in the middle of&amp;nbsp; 2010 featuring 80,000 copies per hour. The presses are equipped with five reel splicers, four printing towers, two folders, and a dryer. They have arrived in Chengdu by mid May.

 This is exactly the right press for printing freaks! Harald Blendowski, Technical Manager at the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper in Germany, is very enthusiastic about the COLORMAN autoprint. | Copyright © Gerd Bergmann.

 Extensive automation for the best and most future-safeguarded workplace in newspaper printing

 &amp;ldquo;This is exactly the right press for printing freaks!&amp;rdquo; Harald Blendowski, Technical Manager at the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper in Germany, is very enthusiastic about the COLORMAN autoprint. He gazes with pride at the product running through the press. With the extensive automation, something priceless has returned for him in the daily routine of printing: stability and tranquility.
The COLORMAN autoprint series marks the beginning of a generation  change in newspaper presses. Driven by the vision of building a fully  automated printing system, the COLORMAN autoprint today is technically  the world&amp;rsquo;s number one. This development also changes the printer&amp;rsquo;s job  profile: from an operator to a monitor of the production process. As is  the case with every generation change, there are ardent supporters as  well as skeptics. &amp;ldquo;Operation of the press has changed dramatically&amp;rdquo;,  explains Georg Riescher, Executive Vice President Newspaper Printing  Systems Business Unit at manroland. &amp;ldquo;The job of printers and operators  is much easier to manage today.&amp;rdquo;
COLORMAN autoprint &amp;ndash; a printer&amp;rsquo;s dreamWith a range of options that provide the highest degree of automation on the market, and a host of further groundbreaking developments, the COLORMAN autoprint is presently by far the most operator-friendly newspaper printing system. The design of the press not only relieves the operator of numerous worksteps, but all manual tasks are ergonomically optimized as well. Moreover, since the operator is in a separate room from the press during production, noise pollution is avoided.
Designed for easy operationThanks to the high level of automation provided by the COLORMAN autoprint, the operator&amp;rsquo;s time-consuming routine tasks are a thing of the past. The design of the COLORMAN autoprint reduces legwork and provides optimal ergonomics for work at the printing units. A high-performance lift platform located directly at the control console for transporting people and materials accelerates plate supply without steps, and saves the time otherwise needed for lifting and lowering materials at each individual printing tower. This simplifies extensive maintenance work in particular. The gallery also features a well thought-out workplace for the operator with ample room and good accessibility plus practical storage space for materials, tools, and washing agents.
Best health protection and a constant printing processThe workplace strains COLORMAN autoprint operators are exposed to are very slight. The high level of automation reduces the time an operator needs to spend at a running press to the absolute minimum. The automated plate transport system APL logistics for instance permits the cassettes for the APL robot to be loaded in a soundproof room. Manual readjustment of the press during printing is no longer necessary. The COLORMAN autoprint features many exclusive technologies that completely relieve the operator of complex readjustments during production.
Patented key technologies for consistently high print quality

Sensors directly in the plate cylinder continually measure the  cylinder temperature and regulate the fountain solution feed during  production (InlineDampening Control)&amp;nbsp;
A control circuit for permanently constant web tension (InlineTension Control)
Roller bearings that automatically compensate for heat expansion of the inking/dampening unit rollers (IROLOC) and thus contribute to sustainability and reduce maintenance and wear
A long inking unit for greater storage capacity and the most constant density

New control console conceptOperation from the control console has fundamentally changed as well. The new manroland control console offers by far the most integrated functions but is easier to operate than ever before. The fully automated printing process needs much fewer operating elements because the portrayal of the autoprint sequences and the function selection is clearly arranged, and the control console reliably guides the operator through the production process like a navigation system. A visit to the manroland Print Technology Center in Augsburg is the best way for printers to find out how operator-friendly the COLORMAN autoprint really is. There they can see for themselves how their workplace can look like in the future.

 In a joint effort between manroland and TMG a solution was found to produce the same quantity of newspapers in full color on seven instead of the current ten presses, says manroland Project Manager Sixten Zapf. | © manroland, photo: Marcel Schaar.

 De Telegraaf, Amsterdam: seven at one stroke

 Since 1985 the Telegraaf Media Groep N.V. (TMG) has been working with manroland presses. Now TMG wants more and less at the same time: more color, less presses. No problem for the newspaper technology experts from Augsburg.
&amp;ldquo;After the upgrade TMG&amp;rsquo;s products will be printed economically and in top quality provided by manroland&amp;rsquo;s latest technology. We are sure our readers and advertisers will highly appreciate the full color appearance throughout the newspaper,&amp;rdquo; says Harold Tamminga, Print Director at TMG. The Telegraaf printing plant in Amsterdam produces some 8.5 million newspapers per week. De Telegraaf is the Netherland&amp;rsquo;s largest morning paper with a daily circulation of around 700,000 copies. In addition they print various other daily and weekly papers. Telegraaf today operates ten TELEMAN presses. Starting in 1985 six so-called TELEMAN presses were installed. The TELEMAN presses are based on the manroland COLORMAN concept but featuring reel splicers and printing units at a 90 degree angle at ground level, at that time with a full color capability of 12.5 percent. In 1991 three additional TELEMAN presses were installed and the existing presses were upgraded to 25 percent full color capability. In 2001 the tenth TELEMAN was installed and all existing presses were upgraded to 50 percent full color capability. Now in 2011 Telegraaf has decided to upgrade all presses to 100 percent full color and reduce the number of presses to seven, configured for 32 or 48 pages. The process leading up to this project focused on finding the most economical way to create full color throughout the whole newspaper. &amp;ldquo;In a joint effort between manroland and TMG a solution was found to produce the same quantity of newspapers in full color on seven instead of the current ten presses,&amp;rdquo; says manroland Project Manager Sixten Zapf. The required extra color is generated by using components from the future obsolete presses, the quality of the existing components still meets today&amp;rsquo;s standards.
Brand-new PECOM equipmentTo facilitate the transfer process and ensure that daily newspaper production can continue manroland will deliver four additional satellite printing towers. Moving the components and connecting older shaft-driven with new single-motor driven printing units requires a complete renewal of the cabling and the electronic equipment. This comprehends a major PECOM upgrade within the manroland printnet networking system.

 <title>manroland AG - Alma Media’s new printing press to be delivered by manroland </title>

 &lt;img alt=&quot;manroland AG - Alma Media’s new printing press to be delivered by manroland &quot; src=&quot;http://www.printerslounge.com/files/Telanne_Kai_2011_300dpi_sm.jpg&quot; /&gt;Get original file (2385KB)

 The investment in the new Tampere printing facility is in line with Alma Media’s strategy and will contribute to a profitable publishing business while we at the same time keep developing our digital services, says Kai Telanne, President and CEO, Alma Media Corporation. | © Alma Media.

 Date in Tampere

 Alma Media&amp;rsquo;s printing and distribution company Alma Manu Oy has purchased a COLORMAN autoprint for its new newspaper printing facility in Finnish Tampere, due to be completed in 2012, from manroland AG.
The new printing press COLORMAN autoprint will simultaneously print three seven-day newspapers. It can also be used for extensive daytime production, and, thanks to its high degree of automation, for economic printing of smaller runs than today. The new press can print both broadsheet and tabloid formats.
&amp;ldquo;We selected manroland as the supplier after a thorough evaluation. Their central competitive advantages were the operational efficiency of the machine and its first-class print quality. For example, the new press will allow us to print the entire run of Aamulehti in three hours instead of the current five. The decision was also affected by our trust in manroland as a long-term, experienced partner,&amp;rdquo; says Helvi Liukkaala, Managing Director, Alma Manu Oy.
Environmental factors were high on the list of selection criteria. The material and energy efficiency of the new press are clearly better than those of present equipment, which will decrease the environmental impact of the newspapers.
&amp;ldquo;The investment in the new Tampere printing facility is in line with Alma Media&amp;rsquo;s strategy and will contribute to a profitable publishing business while we at the same time keep developing our digital services. The new, efficient printing facility will also create the opportunity to collaborate with publishers outside the Alma Media Group,&amp;rdquo; says Kai Telanne, President and CEO, Alma Media Corporation.
Construction work at the new facility is advancing according to schedule. The installation of the new printing press will start in the summer of 2012, and its first newspapers will be delivered to customers in early 2013.
Alma Media is a dynamic media company whose best-known products are Aamulehti, Iltalehti, Kauppalehti and Etuovi.com. Alma Media employs approximately 2,800 professionals.

 Dr. Eduard Hoffmann is responsible for printservices in the Webfed Printing Systems business sector. | © manroland, Photo: Andreas Pohlmann.

 Our customers have some of the world’s most efficient printing systems. printservices keeps them up-to-date.

 printservices stands for services and support that guarantees total customer care for the entire life cycle of printing systems. It covers solutions for project management, training, spare and wear parts supply, maintenance, process analysis, upgrades and retrofits, as well as press relocations.
1. Dr. Hoffmann, what does printservices offer your customers? We see ourselves as a partner to our customers and support them proactively for the entire life cycle of their printing systems. In other words, not only when they have a problem. We work together with customers in a farsighted manner to avoid problems by discussing their needs and goals and, depending on the situation, then offering services such as inspections, check-ups, maintenance contracts, upgrades and retrofits, TeleSupport, workflow analyses, training, and process-related technical assistance. The basis for this is always the availability of spare parts and technicians.
2. Which services are aimed at productivity and production reliability? The essential aspects for customers are production reliability and the press productivity coming along. TelePresence and Monitoring are online services that solve problems very fast. With process optimization that is fed from the services just mentioned, we can most immediately identify production potential. This is supported by our regional system service technicians who are in regular contact with the press operating personnel. Basic contracts for support by regional system service technicians, TelePresence, and also regular audits, contracts for spare parts supply and systematic maintenance show advantages. The trend is towards individualized service contracts over a term of two to five years. So planning and production are getting even more reliable.
3. Can you give us any concrete examples of changes in the industry?These can already be recognized by rather smaller service products like ink roller management. Printers are realizing more and more that regular checks and replacement of inking rollers having to withstand up to more than one billion load changes per year can avoid cost-intensive press breakdowns. Many companies replace inking rollers every two years as a preventive measure because this is better than to wait until the individual rollers fail. Complete roller replacements are more efficient and less expensive than replacing individual inking units. manroland has formed a professional team dedicated to this task.
4. How do you ensure flexibility and rapid response in service?manroland has a large base of highly-qualified staff in the factories plus a global network of service companies. Furthermore, we intend to expand the network of regional system service technicians. We also cooperate with our suppliers as well as with service partners. This ensures customers of high flexibility and rapid response all over the world.
5. Are you providing customers worldwide with printservices?We are set up very well with highly trained service technicians for the webfed sector stationed worldwide in seven new service bases and at forty Market Organization locations. These days we are closer to the customers in the regions than we were with our former Sales &amp;amp; Service partner. In many parts of the world, such as Australia, South America or Southeast Asia, we have opened up new regional manroland Sales &amp;amp; Service organizations.
6. How does this optimized service in the regions actually look like? The technicians in our global organization are regularly trained in new developments. Some of these specialists come from our factories and work medium- or long-term in our Market Organization. We also send factory specialists to our customers, mostly in Europe. These operations are planned and coordinated via a networked planning tool that shows capacity available on a global scale. This is how we ensure a fast, professional and efficient customer service.
7. 24/7 service is demanded these days. What does manroland offer here?Numerous specialists are on telephone standby for all problems 24/7. Our TelePresence performance package, which is made up of the principal service TeleSupport plus TeleLink, TeleInspection and TeleConsult, is available for presses up to 17 years old and in some cases even older. The Monitoring function provides continual press surveillance, thus saving on personnel and reducing unplanned press downtime. Spare parts are identified and ordered via TeleSupport outside office hours. Besides that, very many customers already have the possibility to order what they need at any time online from the manroland STORE. However, these are only partial aspects. The decisive factor is regular presence of technicians at customers&amp;rsquo; premises where they help the printing company not only to improve the performance and availability of the press, but also to reduce repair costs and preserve the value of the entire printing system.
8. You have developed the online platform manroland STORE for ordering wear and spare parts. What&amp;rsquo;s behind this?Our customers appreciate using our manroland STORE. This is undoubtedly because press specifics are covered in detail, and the STORE has a wide variety of functions that makes it easy to use. Previously only wear parts were available but also spare parts are being added gradually. Besides easy part identification plus a convenient and fast ordering procedure, the manroland STORE offers a wide range of parts and fast delivery.
9. What is planned for further development of the manroland STORE?The range of parts is a substantial aspect. Once spare parts supply is implemented, a spare parts catalog is displayed at the same time and is being updated online when necessary. The same applies to operating instructions. At the start page, our customers are regularly informed about current offers and smaller upgrades or retrofits. We are gradually adding more business processes, whereby continuous dialog with our customers is extremely helpful and forms the basis for ongoing development of this platform.
10. How do you optimize production processes? Process optimization is an important step towards increasing press productivity. printservices supports printing companies with advisory services and provides solutions to boost efficiency. Highly-qualified process technicians examine the entire production process from prepress to finishing and analyze the production data that is gathered via TeleSupport functions. With the help of extensive evaluations, we pinpoint potential and offer solutions that increase productivity. While costs are rising and with the need to keep them under control, this service has become increasingly important and a significant element of our LifeCycleManagement concept. We offer these consultancy services in close cooperation with our subsidiary company EUROGRAFICA.
11. Can an analysis result in an upgrade or retrofit?Yes, definitely, whereby retrofits are often part of a long-term plan. Upgrades provide the press with new functions that surely make it more suitable for the present or future needs of a printing company or its customers. Upgrading to the latest technology can be a catalyst for creative solutions or production flexibility. This often entails additional press automation through closed-loop systems such as cut-off and color register control, ink density and color balance control, along with automatic blanket washing systems and optimized press acceleration and deceleration sequences to reduce paper waste. Even with presses already equipped to a large extent with such systems, retrofits are worthwhile in many cases because of the relatively short ROI period. With the dynamic cut-off register control system CutCon plus for example, paper waste when changing press speed or following washing sequences is reduced considerably. New, automatic blanket washing systems also significantly reduce paper waste compared with older systems. Our color balance control works many times faster than customary systems and is fully integrated in PECOM. Presetting for every production can be carried out via printnet PressManager. Highly dynamic control and short cycle times are further features and, with corresponding start sequences, even more paper waste can be avoided. TeleSupport is of course also available for these functions. Retrofits such as stitchers, inkjet applications or a format change can make a newspaper more attractive. Besides the press as such, software upgrades result in better networking between the pressroom and the publishing house. We analyze and advise individually which upgrade or retrofit makes economic sense.
12. How do you support customers in further training of their staff?manroland delivers efficient and highly productive presses which imposes new demands on the operators. manroland&amp;rsquo;s training program takes this fully into account. We provide training and continuing education in our Print Technology Center in Augsburg, but also at customers&amp;rsquo; premises or in our local Market Organization company. Further training is not only necessary when a new press is installed or when there is a change in operating personnel. The results of the production process analysis can also imply that this is necessary.
13. Has the Print Technology Center proven to be worthwhile?Yes, we have considerably expanded the web offset course program in Augsburg. In particular, courses in topics like process optimization, process technology or quality assurance are well attended. Also very popular are courses on maintenance and on locating faults in order to reduce maintenance costs and press downtime. Some highlights are our PraxisSeminars and seminars we conduct together with IFRA. In the future, refresher courses or further training measures may well become even more important to make sure operating personnel learn to tap the full potential of printing systems.

 <title>König &amp; Bauer AG - KBA Comet soon also printing in Cameroon</title>

 A KBA Comet is to enter production at SOPECAM in the Cameroon capital Yaoundé in autumn 2011

 Flexible press line for Central Africa

 The global success story of the 8-page KBA Comet press from Koenig &amp;amp; Bauer is about to gain a new chapter in Central Africa. The first installation in Cameroon is scheduled to come on stream at Soci&amp;eacute;t&amp;eacute; de Presse et d&#039;Editions du Cameroun (SOPECAM) in the capital Yaound&amp;eacute; in autumn this year. Since the initial launch at drupa 1995 &amp;ndash; from the very beginning with shaftless drives on the individual subassemblies &amp;ndash; the four-high tower press has clocked up around 200 installations with newspaper, semi-commercial and book printers around the world, in many cases in combination with heatset dryers.
Leading media company in Central Africa Alongside the weekly title WeekEnd Sports &amp;amp; Loisirs, the monthly magazine Nyanga and the weekly supplement Alter Eco, SOPECAM publishes the daily newspaper Cameroon Tribune. With a circulation of 25,000 copies, of which more than half are subscriptions, the most popular daily in Cameroon is published as a bilingual newspaper in English and French. In addition to the company&#039;s own products, it is planned to print three further dailies and a diversity of other products, such as books and advertising inserts, as contract work on the single-width KBA Comet. SOPECAM was founded in 1977 and has also gathered customers among publishing houses in Gabon and other neighbouring countries.
SOPECAM managing director Marie Claire Nnana: &amp;ldquo;The KBA Comet is exactly the right press to support the modernisation of our print facility and our targeted growth. Alongside our core business with newspapers and supplements, we plan to expand increasingly into the schoolbook segment, which is a very promising area of the market in Central Africa. As a highly flexible means of production, the Comet is ideally suited to handle a broad spectrum of printed products, and will integrate seamlessly into a smooth workflow with our new mailroom systems. The convincing full-colour quality and the high production output are further plus points which could not be overlooked on our visits to other Comet users in Africa.&amp;rdquo;
Newspaper technology proven on all continents The KBA Comet for Cameroon is engineered for a maximum output of 75,000 cph with a cut-off length of 578 mm (22 &amp;amp;frac34; in). The standard web width is 760 mm (29.9 in), though the press will be capable of handling variable widths from 578 to 870 mm (22 &amp;amp;frac34; to 34 &amp;amp;frac14; in). In addition to 32-page full-colour tabloid products, it will also be possible to print 48-page tabloid newspapers with up to 16 full-colour pages. The paper flow to the three Pastoline reelstands is maintained by the reel-handling system KBA Patras M. The two four-high towers feature automatic ink supplies, colour register control and fan-out compensation. The superstructure above the KF3 jaw folder includes a former, and automatic cut-off register controls guarantee a high folding quality. Besides provisions for later expansion with further towers, reelstands, a second folder and a hot-air dryer, the project embraces facilities for perforating and a quarter fold. The modern console technology incorporates possibilities for remote maintenance.

 The Koenig &amp;amp; Bauer Group is one of the largest press manufacturers worldwide and has the broadest press range in the industry. The parent company is Koenig &amp;amp; Bauer AG (KBA) with facilities in W&amp;uuml;rzburg, Radebeul, Frankenthal and Trennfeld (all in Germany).
The other core members of the Group are Maschinenfabrik KBA-M&amp;ouml;dling AG in M&amp;ouml;dling, near Vienna (Austria), KBA-Grafitec s.r.o. in Dobru&amp;scaron;ka (Czech Republic), KBA-Metronic AG in Veitsh&amp;ouml;chheim, near W&amp;uuml;rzburg (Germany), KBA-MetalPrint GmbH in Stuttgart (also Germany) and KBA-GIORI S.A. in Lausanne (Switzerland). KBA North America Inc. in Dallas, Texas (USA), is our sales and service subsidiary for the US and Canada. In addition we have sales and service outlets in the UK, France, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Brazil, Russia, Poland, Australia, China, Malaysia and Singapore, plus a global network of dealers. manroland sells T-1400 to Editora Central Ltda. in Maringá, Brazil

                              Good news from the young cooperation between manroland and Tensor: the first press within this agreement, a Tensor T-1400, was sold to Editora Central Ltda. in Maring&amp;aacute; in the northeast of the Brazilian state Paran&amp;aacute;. It will be delivered in March to print the newspaper O Diario do Norte de Paran&amp;aacute; with a daily circulation of around 20,000 copies and semicommercial work.
&amp;ldquo;We couldn&amp;rsquo;t have had a better start,&amp;rdquo; says Albrecht R&amp;ouml;ser, manroland Sales Representative South America. &amp;ldquo;We are glad that our first customer within our cooperation with Tensor is a newspaper publisher who has been working with competitor presses until now. Offering Tensor equipment gave us access to this smaller, yet very successful printing company which is also one of the leading regional multimedia groups.&amp;rdquo; In August 2010 manroland and Tensor concluded a distribution agreement making manroland the marketing and sales partner of Tensor&amp;rsquo;s presses with a focus on high-growth emerging countries such as in Central and South America. Tensor has been manufacturing single-width web offset presses since 1993 and has sold a total of approximately 2,600 printing units worldwide so far. The cooperation marked an important step in manroland&amp;rsquo;s strategy to strengthen the brand and market position in markets with dynamic growth rates. Tensor&amp;rsquo;s equipment rounds off manroland&amp;rsquo;s product range with presses combining a budget-priced investment with efficient production.
Decision after diligent search Franklin Vieira da Silva, President at Editora Central, says: &amp;ldquo;We chose Tensor after a diligent search. We visited installations in Norway, Denmark, and Turkey which convinced us that the Tensor concept is exactly what we were looking for. The press is a 100 percent US product and gives us the quality and versatility we need for our daily production. We are sure our investment will be strongly recognized in our area.&amp;rdquo; Editora Central Ltda. is one of the leading regional multimedia groups of Brazil. In addition to the 39 year old flagship newspaper the group also owns Radio Cultura AM, a popular radio station, odiario.com, a general news website, and other online and offline media businesses in niche markets ranging from a bus advertising company to entertainment online guides.
New press, new pressroom The T-1400 consists of six reel splicers, four eight-couple towers for full-color production, two U printing units, the Tensor H50 folder, and a UV dryer for semi-commercial applications. The press runs at 35,000 cylinder revolutions per hour and features a production management and remote control system. It will be adequately received at O Diario with a newly built pressroom.

 Welcome, offset printing (f. l.): Ulrich Pfefferer, Executive Sales Manager, manroland; Dr. Martin Ilavský, Managing Director, Slovenská Grafia; Dr. Silver Luco, Economic Director, Slovenská Grafia; Tilman Scharf, Legal Counsel, manroland; Luboslav Kováčik, Sales, manroland Czech Republic/Slovakia. | © manroland.

 With two new LITHOMAN systems, Slovenská Grafia says goodbye to gravure printing

 Replacing two gravure printing presses&amp;nbsp;was not a sudden decision &amp;ndash; and yet, in the end, it was the clear choice. After comprehensive consulting and numerous reference visits, Slovensk&amp;aacute; Grafia is convinced of the LITHOMAN&amp;rsquo;s performance capabilities.
As the oldest printing company in Slovakia, Slovensk&amp;aacute; Grafia can glance back at a long history of important developments. In 1935, the first publications printed in color came off the presses. The year 1956 marked the first production of color magazines on gravure and offset rotary presses. Technology for the filmless production of printing formes in gravure printing was already introduced in 1997. And now the decision for the latest stage of development has been reached.
Two giant leaps into the futureWith the investment in two new LITHOMAN systems, Slovensk&amp;aacute; Grafia, a member of the grafobal group, has implemented a complete conversion to modern offset printing. Quality, reliability and cost-effectiveness were the deciding factors for the LITHOMAN presses. Concrete statements from manroland relating to waste, availability, press service life and quality criteria, as well as reference visits to customers with long-term experience with the LITHOMAN, were instrumental in the final decision. An additional important point was the local support and excellent service on the part of the manroland market organization, as well as the positive experiences with the comprehensive service range. The two new systems are a perfect fit for Slovensk&amp;aacute; Grafia&amp;rsquo;s strategy of guaranteeing professional, flexible services in a wide variety of formats to meet customer requirements.
The company&amp;rsquo;s largest customers include the publishing houses Burda Eastern Europe and Burda Prague, Ringier Axel Springer Slovakia and Ringier Axel Springer Czech Republic, Sanoma Budapest, Ringier Budapest and Bauer Media. In the advertising printing segment, major clients are retail chains such as NAY, BILLA, Douglas, and Metro Cash and Carry. Clients in the catalog printing segment include OTTO, Halens, Bon Prix, Bakker, and well-known travel agencies. &amp;ldquo;We are pleased to be able to support Slovensk&amp;aacute; Grafia with the retention and expansion of this demanding clientele,&amp;rdquo; says manroland sales manager Ulrich Pfefferer.

 <title>Koenig &amp; Bauer AG - First triple-width KBA Commander CT for Europe</title>
 <link>http://www.printerslounge.com/en/node/61932</link>
 <description>
 Der neue Tag in Weiden invests in compact newspaper press technology

 With an investment package totalling €25 million, the newspaper and media house “Der neue Tag” in Weiden, Northern Bavaria, is setting off along the road to an even more successful future. Following the example of the New York Daily News and the Canadian print group Transcontinental, Der neue Tag has opted for the triple-width version of the highly automated compact press KBA Commander CT to boost its production and publishing activities. This order already raises KBA&#039;s sales of the most modern conventional offset technology currently available to the newspaper market to 72 towers – 33 in the triple-width version and 39 for double-width lines. Negotiations on further projects are approaching conclusion.
The 48-page installation with two 6/2 towers is to be set up in a new print centre on the Weiden-West commercial estate, and after commissioning in summer 2011 will gradually take over production from an existing KBA Express dating from 1995. In addition to the press hall, the 16,000 m2 site is to accommodate also warehouse space, a new mailroom and dispatch hall, and the integrated pre-press department for the new print centre.
“Voice of the region”
The company was founded by Anton Döhler and Victor von Gostomski on 31st May 1946, and is now opening a new chapter in the long-standing partnership with Koenig &amp;amp; Bauer AG (KBA) with its order for the Commander CT. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the breaking of the ground for the new print centre, publisher and board member German Vogelsang explained how the largest investment in the company&#039;s history to date was aimed at strengthening the newspapers as the “voice of the region” in a fast-changing media landscape, and would thereby help to secure the long-term future of the media house: “The decision was preceded by many months of critical evaluation, analysis and research. Such an ambitious project is seen as a gesture of confidence in the region, and naturally also in our core business. This high-tech press from Koenig &amp;amp; Bauer will enable us to print our newspapers, advertisers, supplements and magazines even more flexibly, efficiently and economically, with even more up-to-date content and in excellent full-colour quality.”
The media house is today owned by the families Döhler, Shanahan, Vogelsang and Panzer, and with a staff of more than 400 publishes the largest daily newspaper in the region, Der neue Tag, together with the regional titles Sulzbach-Rosenberger Zeitung and Amberger Zeitung and five further local editions. The daily circulation lies at around 84,000 copies. This output is augmented by a variety of weekly advertisers which are published by the company itself and like the newspaper products serve more than two-thirds of the Oberpfalz region. Further capacities are occupied by contract printing for advertising titles and other newspaper-like products.
Compact future-oriented press technology
The KBA Commander CT 6/2 press has been ordered in a substructure configuration for a cylinder circumference of 910mm (35.8in) and a maximum web width of 1,890mm (74.4in). It is engineered to print up to 90,000 full-colour newspapers per hour in straight production. The two compact triple-width towers are equipped with fully automatic KBA PlateTronic plate changers, automatic KBA RollerTronic roller locks, KBA NipTronic cylinder bearings, KBA FanoTronic fan-out compensation, automatic colour register control, KBA CleanTronic blanket washing and central ink supplies. The two KBA Pastomat CL reelstands are loaded automatically via the KBA Patras A reel-handling system with integrated stripping station and daily store.
Further important features include two double turner decks, a folder superstructure with three formers, a KBA KF 5 jaw folder, a section stitcher, a skip slitter and a variable perforation unit for tear-out ads (“Zip’n’Buy”). Half-covers and flying pages are additional production options. The very low start-up waste is achieved with a combination of reel alignment facilities, cut-off register control and web guidance systems. The KBA Commander CT 6/2 is operated from two ErgoTronic consoles incorporating KBA&#039;s production scheduling and press presetting functions, with the modules KBA EasyStart and EasyStop for automatic press start-up and run-down.
Publishing house manager Reinhold Pöll: “Our visits to the Commander CT installations in Würzburg and New York convinced us of the benefits offered by the various automation modules with regard to makeready times, waste reduction, print quality and the ease of handling and maintenance. The compact overall design, the push-button opening of the towers and the lifts on both sides relieve the press crew of an enormous amount of legwork and are characteristic for the high level of operator convenience.”

 The Koenig &amp;amp; Bauer Group is one of the largest press manufacturers worldwide and has the broadest press range in the industry. The parent company is Koenig &amp;amp; Bauer AG (KBA) with facilities in Würzburg, Radebeul, Frankenthal and Trennfeld (all in Germany).
The other core members of the Group are Maschinenfabrik KBA-Mödling AG in Mödling, near Vienna (Austria), KBA-Grafitec s.r.o. in Dobruška (Czech Republic), KBA-Metronic AG in Veitshöchheim, near Würzburg (Germany), KBA-MetalPrint GmbH in Stuttgart (also Germany) and KBA-GIORI S.A. in Lausanne (Switzerland). The core companies in the Group employ some 7,500 people.
